A reputed higher education institution in Qatar is inviting nominations and applications for the position of Senior Legal Specialist. The Senior Legal Specialist must be a proven leader with the skills and expertise necessary to support the Legal Affairs Department in fully implementing the organization’s mission and vision.
Duties & Responsibilities:
This position requires an experienced legal professional, who will provide support in protecting and defending the organization from any legal disputes, claims, or other legal consequences in line with organizational objectives, local and international laws and regulations. The incumbent will prepare the necessary briefs / documents for lawsuits involving the organization and ensure strong legal representation for the organization.
The candidate should have significant experience working in a similar or related field and possess the qualifications necessary to be successful in the role of Senior Legal Specialist.
The successful candidate will be responsible to contribute to the development of Legal policies, procedures and processes for the organization, as required by the Legal Affairs Manager. S/he will provide to the Legal Affairs Manager in developing and updating the Dispute Resolution Guidelines, manage and review the validity of disputes between parties, and ensure compliance with the organization’s quality standards, processes and strategy. The candidate will also, conduct all investigations required to facilitate the case, assess evidence, request and overseeing technical or economic expertise, draft reports, and prepare interim and / or final decisions.
The candidate will assist the Legal Affairs Manager in drafting and proof reading contracts, agreements, MoU’s, and templates, and identify potential conflicting statements or areas of further investigation, and ensure accuracy and quality of documents are maintained, in accordance with the organization’s legal protocol. S/he will translate legal documents from English to Arabic or vice versa, provide claims analysis as well as avoidance and mitigation strategies on activities and projects with significant financial, legal and reputational exposure to the organization.
The candidate will liaise with external legal counsel and follow up on court cases involving the organization, to ensure the organization is well – represented in court. This includes preparation of witnesses, reports and any other evidence required to ensure the organization’s position is protected. Furthermore, the candidate will also prepare appropriate briefs for litigation, pre-trial, trial, and on appeal as directed by the Legal Affairs Manager.
The candidate will ensure quality assurance of any documents produced or communicated by the organization in court proceedings and/or dispute resolution processes, i.e. case pleadings, statutory requests for information, and instruct external counsel when applicable. S/he will develop and maintain a database on litigations, disputes and complaints, ensure cases are accurately logged and tracked in line with organization’s database management protocol.
The candidate will adopt a balanced approach aimed at reaching a fair and equitable position enabling long term solutions, prepare timely reports to the Legal Affairs Manager on related matters and, review and analyze prosecution trends and outcomes, to ensure alignment with international best practice.
The Senior Legal Specialist will keep abreast with the latest laws, rules and regulations that can impact the organization, and interpret corresponding implications of legislation on the organization. S/he will support the Legal Affairs Manager in developing strong relationships with external legal resources specialized in litigation and dispute resolution and stakeholders, as needed to obtain high quality and value added legal support in a cost-effective manner.
Education and Certifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Law or related field is required.
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in litigation or related field.
Fluency in written and spoken English & Arabic is required.
Other Required Skills:
Good organization skills and time management skills with a high standard of professional integrity. A proactive can-do attitude to work and good time management is essential. The ability to think analytically and solve problems and good attention to detail is required. Commitment to positive relationship building and effective working relationships across all levels of the organisation is required. Familiarity with the legal system in Qatar. Knowledge in drafting legal documentation and conducting legal research is required. Commitment to ongoing training and continuous professional development is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate explanatory communication and interpersonal skills. Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
